| 1930 Model A Project, A lifetime Passion with Fords. This story of a passion for vintage Fords and Hot Roding in Australia dates back way before the 70's but for the purpose of this story we will only go back as far as 1972 when Barry senior took delivery of his 1930 Model A pickup from the U.S.A. The tail as told to me started when one of Barry's mates was due to visit the U.S., Barry's friend had asked him if he wanted anything from America while he was over there and Barry responded with the answer of "Bring back a Model A Pickup if you find one". Not thinking if his friend was serious Barry's mate came back from the U.S. and told him that his model A was on it's way to Australia from California in a sea container, this was totally unexpected as Barry was only joking when he asked for one. After being in storage for some years Barry made the move to start rebuilding his Model A in 1980. The chassis and drive train was Hot Rodded while the cab and pickup bed was retained in original form. The engine for the job was a 289 sourced from a Falcon XT with GT spec. coupled up to a C4 automatic transmission and an 8 3/4 compact fairlane differential. The project took 6 years to complete. In 1986 the 1930 Pickup was registered for road use for the first time in Australia. Barry Batten Senior (founder of BPT Motorsport) with his 1930 Model A Pickup.(first rebuild since registered in 1989). Since first being registered in Australia Barry and his model A had certainly done some kilometers allot of which were made in the North West of Western Australia. The model A had received a lot of recognition in the North of Western Australia with local car clubs and newspapers, also after moving back to Perth Barry had received an award for the most daily driven Hot Rod in Western Australia which was a testament to Barry's engineering on the model A for reliable ness. As with any vehicle how ever it was time for a midlife rebuild as the kilometers were getting up there and the duco needed attention, So in 2003 Barry set to striping down the car for the rebuild and along the way re-engineer some vital components to keep up with new standards. The rear suspension was revised to accept coil over shock while using a four bar link and pan hard. The front suspension was lowered 6 more inches using an after market lowered I beam axle.
Front suspension, 6" lowered Beam. After a lot of convincing from son's Barry (junior) and Terry the old 289 was replaced by a newer 5.0L multipoint fuel injected engine. Amongst engine modifications a new custom grind cam designed by Barry was installed, relocation of the throttle body was a requirement as to accept the Mass Air Flow meter for S.E.F.I. and the front end accessory drive belt was retained but with minor modification made to the bracketry.

The custom wiring loom for the engine was completed in house at B.P.T. as well as utilization of the stock Ford PCM engine management with EecTuner for the ultimate in stock Ford PCM control. The wiring harness was designed and assembled out of vehicle and then later installed for final fit. Integrated into the wiring system was a single stage electro fan control circuit and keyless anti-theft engine immobilization system. Additional extra features include electronic analogue odometer, multi speed wiper motor control courtesy lamp on entry, Compact Disk stereo system with in screen antenna and On Board Diagnostics. Other options are just a connection away if activation is required such as trip information data, cigar lighter etc.

The exhaust system consists of custom made ceramic coated block huger extractors and a custom made stainless exhaust system. Work on the exhaust system was made by D&T Performance Exhaust in Wangara Perth. Transmission is the same C4 that was mounted behind the 289cui with the exception of a fresh rebuild and high performance valve body and gear set. Transmission was rebuilt by Dimoff Transmissions in Malaga Perth.
The upholstery was completed by Graeme John from Autopolstery in Gosnells Perth. Graeme is renown throughout the Perth Hot Rodding community for his top notch work. Fitted throughout with the original bucket seats being re padded and covered and the theme being ray's of sun on the door trims, roof lining and seats in red velour and black vinal. Final interior custom design.

At the very first turn of the key the engine sprung into life with no glitches. To drive the car now is a real treat, the response from the engine is somewhat more higher and becomes a challenge on the co-ordination of the right foot to ease power on gradually so as not to suffer major whiplash on take off. Fuel economy is deniably so much more better than before with a range of 550klm's with a 75 liter tank of premium unleaded.
